Columbia might have gone years longer without compiling the duo's hits, but then, in June of 1972, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel did something totally unexpected - in the midst of Simon's still-emerging solo career (and the careful crafting of his identity as a single act), and Garfunkel's re-identification of himself as an actor, the two reunited for one night, to do a benefit performance at New York's Madison Square Garden for the presidential candidacy of Senator George McGovern. Its very existence is something of a fluke - in the spring of 1972, the five original Simon & Garfunkel albums, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM, Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme, Bookends and Bridge Over Troubled Water, were still selling almost as well as they had in the 1960s indeed, Bridge Over Troubled Water had carved out a seemingly permanent place for itself on the charts for years and between the continued radio play of the duo's biggest hits, and the inevitable discovery of their catalog by successive new waves of junior high and high school students, those five LPs stood among the most profitable parts of the Columbia Records back catalog, rivaling Bob Dylan's much larger library in sheer numbers. Simon & Garfunkel released the following albums including The Graduate (1986), Collected Works (1990), Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits (1990), Garfunkel (1990), Parsley Sage Rosemary & Thyme (1990), The Concert in Central Park (1996), Old Friends (1997), Concert In Central Park/20 Greatest Hits (1998), The Best of Simon & Garfunkel (1999), Tales from New York: The Very Best of Simon & Garfunkel (2000), Columbia Studio Recordings 1964-70 (2001), Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (2001), Bookends (2001), Sounds of Silence (2001), The Essential Simon & Garfunkel (2003), Definitive Simon & Garfunkel (2004), Old Friends Live on Stage (2 CD) (2004), Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD) (2004), Live From New York City, 1967 (2008), Wednesday Morning, 3 AM (2008), Live 1969 (2009), X2:Bookends/Sounds of Silence (2009), Simon and Garfunkel Greatest Hits: Best of the Best Gold (2010), The Essential 3.0 Simon & Garfunkel (2010) and Bridge Over Troubled Water (2011).This album has had over three decades to make an impact, and it says something for its staying power that, in the face of more recent, more generously programmed, and better mastered compilations of the duo's work, it remains one of the most popular parts of the Simon & Garfunkel catalog - which doesn't mean it isn't fraught with frustrations for anyone buying it. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Simon and Garfunkel #40 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Simon & Garfunkel is a singer-songwriter duo consisting of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. They have received several Grammys and are inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2007).
